There are several commercial bait-makers that make versions of Nelsons formulas. A couple I know of are Rich Kaspar from Nebraska, and Brian Roberts from Illinois.

I have one of the formulas that I will post below, I don't use any of Nelsons in our lure business so it's one I am willing to share because I will never use it.

Fill a Quart Jar 2/3rds full with meat for base.

Allow to rot down well.

Add 8 teaspoons of Tincture of Asafoetida

1/2 oz of Oil of Rhodium

4 oz Tonquin

6oz natural scent (natural scent is made by mixing 4 oz of red fox gland with 1/2 gallon of fox urine.)

Almost fill the jar with pure sun rendered skunk oil, and blend with 10-15 drops of skunk essence.

Mix very well and allow to age in a warm place for 4 months, a year is better. Use 8-10 drops when scenting.

After the aging is complete add 8 teaspoons of Tincture of Valerian and mix very well. DO NOT add this tincture until aging is complete.

I hope that helps.

I am glad I could help you out.

Bill I have some more of Nelson’s canine and cat formulas if you would be interested in them. Just let me know.

My wife and I are in the lure-making business but we use our own formulas, so the ones I have of Nelson’s will never be used to make anything we sell. They are good formulas and work well.

I just believe if we sell a lure or bait it should be developed by us, tested nationwide by many trappers and if the feedback is overwhelmingly positive we will then bottle them for sale. If we get negative feedback we dump any remaining quantity and start over.

The "ole Nelson Formula" thread.
These formulas are purported to be some of the best ever produced. Whether that's true or not, I have no knowledge. I just know that starting in the late 90's it seems, these formulations came back into the mainstream.
Another thing I have come to understand, the original Nelson formula for a canine bait was NOT made from a bobcat base.
Many people claim to have the original recipes, and quite a few are sold as "original", be wary of what you buy.
What I do know of the man: He was an unbelievable fox and mink trapper back in his day. Worked his butt off, ran hard, and was innovative.
Late last year there was a biography that was compiled on his life and trapping endeavors. I have not got it YET, but will own it.
